There are 4 parts to a turn where the player rolls for resource and trade, field or buy development cards. It is an interactive social game that promotes co-operation, thinking and confronting problems.

The settlers of catan board is made up 19 hexagonal pieces that are put out at random at the start of the game which means each game is different and there are 100s of different ways for the game to be played. The hexagonal pieces represent different resource types of brick, wool, ore, grain or lumber and one piece (tile) is a desert which has no resources.
